Kathmandu, 20 Mangsir. The CPN (Maoist Center) has concluded that the results of the local level by-elections are encouraging and that it has prepared the basis for contesting the upcoming elections alone. The central office meeting held in Khumaltar, the residence of Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, reached this conclusion today.
‘Today’s meeting has made a preliminary review of the local level by-elections. It has been concluded that the results obtained in terms of both the number of seats won and popular vote are encouraging,’ said Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota after the meeting. ‘This is the conclusion of today’s office meeting that it has now prepared the basis for contesting the upcoming elections alone with its own agenda and identity.’
The Maoist Center has considered the addition of Puthauttarganga rural municipality in Rukum East and Sarkegad rural municipality in Humla to the remaining municipalities and wards, as well as coming second in terms of popular vote, as an achievement. Spokesperson Sapkota informed that the party has taken the growing confidence and enthusiasm of the people towards the Maoists as evidenced by the victory in Puthauttarganga Rural Municipality in Rukumpur, unopposed in the ward there, victory in Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot, Gramthan Rural Municipality in Morang, wards of Nuwakot, Udayapur, Gorkha, Dhanusha, Dolpa and other places with huge margins, and second place in 12 places including Kirtipur Municipality in Kathmandu, which was in a very weak position in the third place, with significant votes, etc. despite all the parties forming an alliance, he said. He said that even though it came second in Kirtipur, the people and cadres considered it a victory.
“In the past, we have made some mistakes and weaknesses in not being able to further deepen our relations with the people. Both the party and the people are coming to an agreement,” he said. “Our party has also started a campaign to return to its class, considering the failure to deepen its relations with the people as a weakness. The people have also started to realize again that the Maoists are the party that works in our interests. Now the meaning of the success of the by-election is also linked to this.”
Stating that this result was achieved through the initiative taken by the party through the central office and standing committee meetings and nationwide consultation meetings, and when all the leaders and cadres worked unitedly, Spokesperson Sapkota said, “This by-election has given us additional basis for the large-scale leftist unification and reorganization of the Communist Party. Now, the standing committee and then the central committee meetings are being held on this 27th, and there will be a review there as well. Review reports are also coming from the districts and provinces. Our initial review has called the results encouraging.”
The meeting has decided to make the party’s municipal conferences and municipal-level vigilance meetings effective. Spokesperson Sapkota informed that it has been decided to deploy central leaders at the municipal level for vigilance meetings.
Discussing current issues, the meeting concluded that the government’s effectiveness is at zero. However, spokesperson Sapkota informed that his party is still sticking to its old decision not to be interested in changing the government. ‘Our chairman is clearly saying that we are not going to change the government now, but rather we insist on this government remaining in power until 84,’ he said. ‘Just as the government is showing weakness in terms of service delivery and good governance, our party also wants this government to remain in power until 84 so that anarchists cannot cause further instability under this pretext.’
The Maoist Center has opposed the government’s interference in the Electricity Authority. ‘As the Authority is emphasizing to raise awareness, to stop this, a minister has opened an office in the Electricity Authority to obstruct the work of the Authority, which is unprecedented in history. We will strongly oppose this,’ spokesperson Sapkota said. ‘The government is working to protect middlemen and corrupt people, and the party has decided to systematically warn against this.’ He informed that they will move forward programmatically after holding detailed discussions in the upcoming Standing Committee and Central Committee meetin
